Statement on Coronavirus
We are taking several steps to limit risk in the face of the coronavirus COVID-19. Read our owner’s statement here. (UPDATED 3/16)
Updated 3/16: The coronavirus COVID-19 has moved extremely quickly, and we expect it to continue this exponential growth rate, and many cases go undiagnosed or don’t even present symptoms. To that end, we have chosen to close our play space entirely for the duration of the pandemic.
+1 Gaming was founded on our local community, and this is ultimately about not becoming a vector for disease spread within our community. We cannot guarantee each person coming to our store is practicing caution successfully, so for everyone’s safety we need to take an abundance of precaution in the face of an unprecedented disease.
Things will return to normal, and we’ll throw a party to celebrate. Until then, stay safe and plan some gaming at home.
3/13: First, so far New Orleans is at low risk according to the Louisiana Department of Health. However, this virus spreads exponentially. Things are slow today, but when that changes it will change extremely quickly. So while we are not high risk now, we are taking steps today to minimize spread.
I want to encourage anyone who is sick in any way – even if the symptoms are mild – to stay home. If you do come to the shop, please wash your hands thoroughly before browsing the store.
We are suspending our board game rental program due to the high risk of contamination. We are disinfecting our surfaces daily, and taking extra precautions around high-touch areas like our loose dice and card binders. They will be disinfected and access restricted until you’ve washed your hands thoroughly.
Starting next week we will suspend our tournaments simply because attendance is likely to decline and events will struggle to meet minimum player requirements. Open play events (Commander night, wargaming, RPG Night) will stay open until the LDH recommends otherwise. We highly encourage open play in place of our usual tournament nights, and we’d be glad to fire an event if enough people do happen to come. Use our Facebook Groups to coordinate (+1 Magic: the Gathering, +1 Board Gaming, +1 Roleplaying, and +1 Wargaming).
I am also extending additional paid time off to our staff as needed to ensure nobody is coming to work sick throughout the pandemic, and we are taking extra steps internally to minimize risk and spread such as removing our table cloths and disinfecting surfaces and equipment daily.
This will be a stressful time for everyone, and most of all I hope our hobby and community can be a piece of making this more bearable. It’s a great time to get a new game to make staying home easier, and our space is small enough to minimize risk of contagion if you need to socialize.
I’ll update everyone as the situation develops. Thank you.
